Chinatown Gateway photo by David FalconerThis section was produced in collaboration with The Portland Chinese Times, a locally published, weekly Chinese-language newspaper that is an important resource for the community.

Chinese roots run deep in Portland. From 1880 to 1910 Portland’s Chinatown was second in size only to San Francisco’s. Today, Chinese immigrants from mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and other parts of the world have extended their homes, work and civic activities beyond Chinatown, and now live and work throughout Portland. Since the late 1990’s, more and more Chinese businesses have been established in, or moved to, Southeast Portland, where most of the immigrants live.

For the past 10 years, the local Chinese population has been growing. Many Chinese immigrants choose Portland as their home in the United States because of its green and beautiful environment, its low cost of living compared with other cities, and also because it is a good place to raise children. As the population has increased, so have the variety of Chinese-owned businesses, Chinese schools and activities within the community.
